Little Mister's week to shine ...

Each child in Little Mister's first grade class gets one week to shine. They are super special all week and the kids, of course, love it!!! Who wouldn't? During the mid life crisis I am currently having I would love a week to shine ...

One of the activities he gets to participate in is a science experiment he gets to do for the class. I have been doing research and found some we like ... but I thought I would seek out some help.

Have you done, seen or heard of any science experiments for children that you thought were neat?

Keep in mind it is April and almost all of the kids have already had a turn ... so no volcanoes, diet coke rockets, paper airplanes, dirty penny in coke or the usual ... we have to think outside the box.

Any ideas?

  1. Homemade polymers -- I actually did this in a chem class in high school for a "fun" experiment. It is a substance similar to Gak. You mix water, food coloring, white glue, and borax... here's a recipe: http://www.fatlion.com/science/slime.html

A bunch of high school students thought it was cool, so I'm sure kids would love it even more!

  2. I'm with Denim and Pearls. My high school students did that every year and loved it!! They would carry that silly stuff around all day like it was a trophy. The other things I have seen were done in the Chemistry class and are probably too advanced and dangerous for young children cause they require high heat or an explosion.

  3. Try sciencebob.com for fun ideas. He is a science tutor to child movie stars, etc and has cool experiments.

  4. Yes.. Oobleck is always a favorite of my students. I read them the Dr. Seuss book, "Batholomew and the Oobleck" book. Then use the recipe that denim and pearls listed but add green food coloring. Have each student prepare a small baggie of it, then they can squish it around, which they love!

  5. I was going to say "Quick Sand" one of my 5th graders just did it ~ it went over well - its similiar to Oobleck (cornstarch and water)
