My Newest Hobby

One of my favorite memories from my trip to Palm Beach was a pop in to Lycette Designs.  I have been wanting to learn to needlepoint for quite some time but I had promised myself I would let Jessica teach me how.  After working with her on a blog post a few years ago I was really excited to learn from her and I just decided to wait until we could meet in person.  I was so excited to be able to visit Jessica at her darling store, take a lesson, and have her help me pick out three canvases to start the needlepoint journey.

I chose a eye mask, a sunglasses case + a canvas that can be framed.  Jessica is so amazing and so patient and made it all seem so easy ... which honestly it is.  After our quick lesson I started stitching later that evening while I was still in town and ended up getting quite a bit done.  It rained most of Saturday and I just stayed in the late afternoon and evening and stitched while watching movies.  It was so relaxing and has quickly become one of my favorite things to do. I love to sit on the porch in the morning with my coffee and stitch and I also love to stitch while Lawyer is watching TV at night.

It took about two weeks to finish the first canvas and I was holding the second one to take with me to the hospital, but one Sunday I was really stressed and ending up stitching more than half of it.  I think the ability to focus on something small and doable takes the rest of the thoughts from your mind. It becomes addictive, you focus on the stitches you have completed and get going and then look up and realize you have work for hours.  I think it truly is my new favorite hobby.

I was feeling really guilty about neglecting my reading for my new favorite hobby and then I remembered my friend Ashley recommending I try Audible.  I listened to most of the last book I read on Audible while stitching.  It was so fun and I was doing two fabulous things at once.  I can not tell you how relaxing it is and how much I feel I have accomplished doing two things at once.  I have really enjoyed reading more this year and I have compiled quite a pile of books I have finished.  It has been so good to be able to control stress with something productive.

If you needlepoint and have not visited Lycette Designs you must.  She paints beautiful canvases and is so very talented.  Her shop is just darling and she has two couches for you to gather and stitch with her.  I can't wait to go back and see her again.  She will help you choose the perfect canvas for you and pick out your threads as well.  If you would love to learn to needlepoint I suggest you give it a try.  It is so easy and so rewarding, I can promise you will love it.

I am about 2/3 of the way through my second canvas and will be done within the week.  I think I am going to wait until I am finished with all three of them before I send them back to her for finishing. That will also be so exciting ... I don't know anything about that yet, but I will get there when the time comes.

Until then I will keep stitching!  Happy Thursday ...

  1. Thanks to Jessica, needlepoint is one of my new favorite hobbies, too! Isn't she the best! I'm a huge Audible listener, usually in the car, but I'll have to try it while needlepointing. Thanks for the idea! Best wishes to you and your dear hubby!

  2. Paige, I first started needlepointing when I was a child, and continue with this wonderful hobby to this day. I'm 71. You now know the joy and contentment that stitching brings. It is truly the most wonderful way to spend one's time, and to stitch while listening to a book is even better. Through the years, I've given much of my stitch works as gifts. For me it truly is the process, not the product.! I know this is a difficult week for you and your family. Keeping you close in thought.

  3. Jessica is THE BEST, and I believe one of the main reasons needlepoint has has a resurgence! She certainly inspired me to start my Needlepoint obsession 2.5 years ago. Her cheeky needlepoint is so fun! Happy stitching to you, Oaige!
