Pattern Play ... Mixing it Up

I am a girl who LOVES to mix patterns.  Can I say that again?!!  I get a little itchy if I need to wear all solids, I just need a little pattern or two to make it feel sassy.  If you joined me last night at Emily McCarthy Shoppe or via live feed you heard me chat about mixing patterns.  Here are the tips I use for making it work for my style.

outfits used as reference during the Hostess Hour ... pattern for days!

Start with a stripe or a chambray shirt and a patterned bottom.  Start simple when you are first mixing patterns.  For me a simple blue stripe is basically a solid.  If you chose the chambray shirt and a patterned bottom add in a leopard shoe or a scarf of a completely different pattern.  Yes, it sounds crazy and yes you will love it.

Add in a pattern shoe to two solid pieces or to a solid and a pattern.  I completely think leopard and tortoise are neutrals and should be used to balance out a lot going on.  For the example last night I used a blue gingham off the shoulder top, a pair of pink jeans, a pair of tortoise slides and an Hermes scarf tied as a belt.  One of my favorite go to outfits!

Gingham and floral do go together and are besties.  The gingham can match the pattern on the bottom or it can be completely different.  #pinkyswear

Add a color monogram to your sleeve.  It will instantly add another color to your outfit.

Add pattern belt or scarf to a solid + pattern outfit like the one I described above.  I own a darling green gingham dress I love to pair with a pattern scarf either at my neck or as a belt.  And yes, the dress is monogrammed and its in pink.

And my pattern mixing doesn't stop with clothes.  I mix patterns for days in our home.  I am currently working on a room upgrade for our youngest who took a two week vacay to the beach.  #luckyduck

To this mix of dot sheets, gingham shams and chevron duvet I added pink monograms to the shams and pink flamingo pillowcases.  It is absolutely darling and I can't wait for the reveal.  I am the opposite of some people. The old saying that says look in the mirror and take one accessory off?  I usually add one more.

And that makes me happy!

Happy pattern playing!!
