Enduring Southern Homes

I remember the day Eric Ross and I "met".  It was about four or so years ago while I was working on my kitchen.  I remember asking a question on my Instagram (and yes it was a silly one) about replacing white plantation blinds (not shutters) in my kitchen with bamboo blinds instead.  I already knew I was replacing them but I threw it out there for thoughts.  One comment will forever stick in my mind.  Eric Ross said to me "you and I both know those blinds need to go", I laughed out loud, followed him immediately and the relationship began.  It was an online only at first and then a year or so later we met in person at a conference and have been real life friends ever since.  Two things stand out to me when I think of Eric.  First, he has an incredible book of business that he adds to all the time with new clients.  He loves traditional design and adores layers, proper drapery and the details which he never skimps on.  The second thing I know to be true is his honesty.  He is brutally honest and has at times caught me off guard with his comments and responses, but he remains true to himself no matter what.  We laugh about it all the time and I have come to cherish that honesty as our friendship continues to grow.

Last year he shared the news with me that he was writing a book.  I can remember driving home from Sea Island and we were catching up and the news was so surprising.  Not that he could not do it, he can probably write at least two more with his stash of business, but that he was taking the plunge on something outside of design.  I knew immediately it would be amazing because every single thing he decorates, designs, and takes on is done to the last tiny little detail.  He will micro manage you to death to get exactly what he wants and needs for his own home and his client and I have come to admire this fact.  I recall when he was renovating his new home and he told me the time line was just three months.  And true to his word (and daily sit ins with his contractors) he made it happen.  If I ever build or gut a home I am calling him ... he will make my schedule happen.

His newly released book, Enduring Southern Homes, is truly incredible.  I have drooled over every single page and am currently going back and reading the chapters which are just as good.  He is witty, dry and very sure of who he is.  I can tell you he is incredibly talented and this book is a true testament to his abilities and his ideas when decorating a home.

It is just that good.

I have some sneak peeks of their new Nashville home, Boxwood Hill, which you will love.  The best thing about his work ... he is just as detailed in his own home as he is with clients.  I absolutely love these images of their home, they are truly fantastic.

More examples of his work ... this time for a client ~ I am only featuring the one client here, but you get the gist as to why you want to purchase this book immediately!! Every single corner of the rooms of the homes he works on are fabulous. 💙

Do you see what I mean? I love so many things about this home, the layers just get me wanting more and more images of this home. You must buy the book to see more, and you will be so happy you did,  this book is a must have!!

I asked Eric his thoughts on writing the book and how it feels to see his work in print and in the hands of followers, clients and friends.

What was it like writing a book?

Writing the book was a very enjoyable process.  I had developed the chapter outline on the front end, which gave me a structure to follow.  I would write a chapter every other week on Sunday afternoons, which is a time we always have available for free time, so the writing didn’t interrupt my work schedule much.

What does it feel like seeing your fabulous work in print and people sharing their love for the book?

I have been overwhelmed and humbled by the overwhelming response from the friends and followers, as well as my industry colleagues.  My goal was to create a book that showcased my design point of view. If you know me, you know my passion is creating comfortable, traditional rooms.  The book allows me to tell the back-story for each project, not just images of pretty rooms, but giving the homes a context for the readers.  I hope so much that they enjoy it and continue to go back and look at the details and small vignettes that I created in each room.  These small moments give each room a more intimate feel and are indicative of my work.

It's done, and you really have a book!!  Tell me how that feels.

I am so pleased with the result.  I think it’s a beautiful book and I am excited to share it and now sit back and enjoy their reactions.

As a huge treat, Eric has partnered with me to give one lucky reader a signed copy of Enduring Southern Homes.  To enter fill out the widget below.  Good luck to all of you, and in the mean time, snag his book.  It makes the most amazing read + gift for a birthday, your mother, sister, favorite design enthusiast and the like.

  22. This looks gorgeous. I actually remember his comment about the bamboo blinds :) It made me laugh out loud because I had bamboo blinds in my first two homes because I loved them so (My mom said "Do It"!) and then I moved into an Atl suburb and "everyone" had those white blinds and I got sucked in!! About the time I read that comment I was well in to hanging bamboo blinds during my ORC.Bamboo blind switch out house wide is almost complete :)))) Ihope I win this fab book!!
